Adaptive Mobility Services, Inc. offers a comprehensive occupational therapy driving evaluation that includes a clinical and an in-traffic portion. The evaluation is performed by an occupational therapy practitioner who is a specialist in driving and community mobility.
The first step is the clinical evaluation and typically takes about 60 to 90 minutes. During this time, the therapist will review pertinent medical history and gather a driving profile. She will perform testing of physical, visual, perceptual and cognitive skills as related to the task of driving.
The second step is the on-road evaluation to observe functional driving skills in various traffic and speed environments. The time on-the-road will depend upon the therapist’s judgment and will be performed in one of our evaluation vehicles. If the driver is not familiar with Orlando, the therapist will provide verbal directions.
If possible, we ask that the person to bring his/her personal vehicle so we may consider the vehicle in our final recommendations. If there is not a personal vehicle, then we recommend not purchasing one until we have seen the individual. We can make specific vehicle recommendations for particular needs.
An initial driving evaluation may take between 2.5 to 4 hours. We can give a better estimate of the time necessary when making the appointment date. Our evaluations typically begin on time per an appointment so please be on time. Also, please plan on eating a meal before arriving to our office for the appointment.
I would advise any wheelchair bound person to go to Adaptive Mobility because of their professionalism and care.
