Driver Training

A driver evaluation for a person with a disability may lead to recommendations for adaptive driving equipment. If so, driving training or instruction and practice with the adaptive equipment will be necessary. This service is provided by an occupational therapy practitioner who is a Specialist in Driving.

If the client already has driving experience, we will teach them another way of operating vehicle controls with hand controls, a left foot gas pedal, a special steering device, mirrors or any other necessary driving equipment or aids. If the client is a new driver, driver training may be coupled with driver education in order to teach one to drive with adaptive equipment and be a good, defensive driver.

Once we are assured that one can be a safe, independent driver, we will finalize a mobility prescription with the adaptive driving equipment listed specific to an individual and a personal vehicle.

Some people need driver training services because of not having driven in a long time or because of having a change in driving patterns and routes. Many people have never driven or have limited driving experience and, therefore, require a lengthier period of training with or without special equipment coupled with specialized driver education. We provide driver education for new drivers through textbook study and review, classroom instruction, and videos. The knowledge learned is then transferred to the training vehicle for practicing actual driving skills. We provide these services for all age groups and disability groups such as persons with Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida, Asperger’s Syndrome, Autism, Short Stature, learning and attention deficit and many more.

I would advise any wheelchair bound person to go to Adaptive Mobility because of their professionalism and care. Eric from Deland, FL
