Tia Hughes, OTR/L, DRT
Graduating
in 1991 from the University of Florida
with a B.S. Degree in Occupational
Therapy, Tia has worked in a variety
of settings, both clinical and academic.
She began by working at Vanderbilt
University Medical Center in burn
rehabilitation and orthopedics.
In
1993, she became outpatient supervisor
at Sunrise Rehabilitation Hospital
in Florida where she worked in rehab
driving after attending the Building
Blocks and Take the Wheel courses.
While at Sunrise, Tia began vision
therapy services and developed their
comprehensive vision assessment. In
1995 she left Sunrise and worked in
skilled nursing facilities where she
instituted pre-driving screenings
for sub-acute patients. During this
same time, she worked part-time for
Adaptive Mobility Services, Inc. as
a driver rehab therapist.
In 1998 she moved to
Albany, GA and worked at a local hospital
with both inpatients and outpatients.
While there, she created a comprehensive
vision screening and pre-driving assessment.
She became an instructor at the area
OTA Program and later became the fieldwork
Coordinator. She returned to Florida
in 2002, and worked again with Adaptive
Mobility Services, Inc.
as a driving rehab therapist until
taking a job as the Chairperson of
the OTA Program at Florida Hospital
School of Allied Healthcare Professions.
She has presented locally
and nationally on driving rehabilitation
services and vision. She has taught
seven OT courses with focus on physical
dysfunction and OT. Tia has served
on numerous task forces on documentation
and reimbursement. Her graduate studies
have been in Health Care Administration.
